I Peter (Extra Credit)

None of us likes the feeling that we have failed at something, but, sooner or later, all of us seem to fail--and sometimes we feel like we have failed the really big test: life itself.

Peter certainly could understand the feeling that one is a failure: it was a feeling he sometimes shared. In I Peter, however, he provides us with a recipe for true success in life.

Please read through all of I Peter. Cite below a verse or two that seem to you to be particularly good examples of Peter's advice for success in life. Explain why you chose these particular verses.

  1. I Peter 2:17, “Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.” That pretty much sums up how we need to live life. We have to respect others and love God; it sounds really simple, but in the end it is not. No matter how hard we try we always fall short of the glory of God. However, as long as we keep going with the knowledge that God loves and forgives us we can still live a great life. We just have to come back to God and follow these two simple steps. It is a repeat of how Jesus answered the question, “Which commandment is greatest?” Jesus answered, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.” All we have to do to be successful in life in the eyes of God is love him and love our neighbors as ourselves. Peter reiterates that in his book. -Kelly Longden

  2. 1 Peter 4:10-11:"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen." Peter is telling us that we need to learn to live our lives according to the will of God, not man. Basically, if we "commit to the Lord whatever [we] do, and [our] plans will succeed" (Proverbs 16:3).-Melinda Quade

  3. 1 Peter 3:8 "Finally, all of you, be of one mind, sympathetic, loving toward one another, compassionate humble." Here Peter is very direct with his message and says that we are to treat others in a caring manner and not to think ourselves better then others. Peter is essentially stating the basic virtues to living a moral and selfless lifestyle.

  4. 1 Peter 5:6-7 "Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all anxiety on him because he cares for you." I think both of these verses are really important to remember. The one that I need to focus on the most is verse 7, remembering that he cares for me, so I shouldn't worry. I struggle with worrying about my future and everything, but trusting that God loves me and will take care of me takes that burden away and allows me to focus on other people more.
